Many tourists only stay one night in Kigali before going gorilla trekking, missing out on the city’s diverse culture, cuisine, and scenery. Plan to stay here for at least a few days at the start or finish of your journey.
At Kigali’s largest marketplace, Kimironko Market, stock up on handmade clothing made from swirling patterned textiles and take in the vibrant ambiance. The warehouse is like a maze, with unexpected twists and turns at every corner.
Then visit Inema Arts Center, a gallery that shows the work of up to ten local artists in residence, to learn more about Kigali’s creative environment. Proceed to the Rwanda Art Museum, which is located in the former Presidential Palace. It features some of Rwanda’s and the surrounding region’s finest contemporary works. The wreckage of the presidential plane that crashed in 1994 may also be seen.
When you’re ready to refuel, stop into Question Coffee Cafe for an authentic Rwandan cup of coffee. Look over the cafe’s specialties menu to see what new caffeinated concoctions the baristas have created recently. They’re known for infusing coffee drinks with unusual local ingredients such as tree tomato.
Finally, unwind with a delectable lunch at one of Kigali’s outstanding eateries. The Hôtel des Mille Collines’ Le Panorama Restaurant offers stunning views of the city as well as a broad cuisine of local and international favorites.
